Rochester, Mich. -- For the second straight game, freshman Myles Hunter scored a career-high 18 points with four 3-pointers, but the Youngstown State men's basketball team dropped an 81-74 decision to Oakland on Saturday afternoon at the Athletics Center O'Rena.
The Penguins fall to 7-7 overall and 3-7 in the Horizon League while the Golden Grizzlies improve to 5-12 overall and 5-5 in league play.
Senior Garrett Covington poured in 16 points with seven rebounds while freshman Shemar Rathan-Mayes scored 15 points and seven assists.
Leading the Golden Grizzlies was Jalen Moore with 31 points and 12 assists.
In a game that featured 10 lead changes and seven ties, the Golden Grizzlies, who shot 56.5 percent from the field in the second half, used an 8-0 late in the second half to turn a one-point deficit, 61-60, into a seven-point lead, 68-61, with 4:17 left. Moore scored all eight points on a jumper and a pair of 3-pointers.
Hunter got the Penguins to within four with a 3-pointer and within three, 71-68, with 2:26 remaining, but YSU would not get any closer than three points.
In the first half, the Penguins shot 47.4 from the floor and led by as many as 10 points, 31-21, with 6:10 left in the half.
Although the Golden Grizzlies whittled their way back within striking distance, the Penguins were able to maintain the lead, 41-39, at halftime.
Youngstown State will play the final eight of 10 games at Beeghly Center starting with a two-game series against UIC, Jan. 22-23. Tipoff for both games is set for 5 p.m.
