Rochester, Mich. -- Freshman Myles Hunter scored a career-high 18 points and three others reached double figures, but the Youngstown State men's basketball team dropped an 82-65 decision to Oakland on Friday night at the Athletics Center O'Rena.
The loss drops the Penguins to 7-6 overall and 3-6 in Horizon League play while the Golden Grizzlies improve to 4-12 overall and 4-5 in the league.
Senior Garrett Covington scored 15 points, senior Naz Bohannon just missed a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds and freshman Shemar Rathan-Mayes added 10 points.
Leading the Golden Grizzlies was Jalen Moore and Rashad Williams with 18 points each.
Oakland shot 51.8 percent from the field and made 10 3-pointers while the Penguins connected on just 39.1 percent for the game after making 48.1 percent from the field in the first half.
Hunter was the Penguins spark in the first half making 6-of-7 shooting from the floor, including four 3s.
After just two lead changes and three ties, the Penguins led by as many as eight, 34-26, late in the first half
Golden Grizzlies outscored the Penguins 12-2 over the last 3:07 of the half to take a 38-36 lead into the lockerroom at the intermission.
The Penguins tied the game at the start of the second half before Oakland built a six-point lead, 46-40.
Youngstown State got within one, 50-49, by scoring nine of 13 points with 12:51 left after a bucket by Bohannon.
Oakland then went on a 15-0 run over the next four minutes to expand its lead to 16, 65-50.
The Penguins were able to slice the lead down to 11, 70-59, but would not get any closer.
The Penguins and Golden Grizzlies close out the series on Saturday at 3 p.m.
