
Bowling Moves Up Five Spots on Saturday at Columbia 300 Music City Classic

The Youngstown State bowling team went 3-2 in head-to-head matches and moved up five spots in the team standings on Saturday at the Columbia 300 Music City Classic in Smyrna, Tenn.
The Penguins posted the 10th-highest round of the day on Saturday with a 4,797 over five traditional games. It was an improvement of 491 pins from Friday's total, which allowed YSU to move up to 17th in the standings.
Emma Dockery was the top YSU individual with a five-game total of 1,019, which placed her 20th among 186 bowlers in the field. Emma Wrenn was 33rd with a 986, Sarah Florence was three spots behind her with a 974, and Nikki Mendez placed 47th with a 957. Rachel Darrow, Ashley Kolb, Alexis Sullivan and Megan Grams all bowled in the fifth spot in the lineup.
"Today was a much better day," said YSU head coach Doug Kuberski. "It was great to get going with an 1,100, and we did a solid job figuring out the moves pair-to-pair, which is especially challenging this weekend. We got back to Penguin Bowling today and were a top-10 team. After enjoying a fun night on the town tonight, we'll rest up and look to carry our momentum into tomorrow and finish on a high note."
Mendez had YSU'ss highest game of the round to start the day with a 246 against Drury. She threw the front six and finished with seven strikes in the game. Wrenn also had seven strikes in a 244, and four bowlers totaled at least a 213 against the Panthers as YSU won 1,102-922. The Penguins were one of just two teams to break 1,110 on the day.
YSU dropped its second match 929-894 to No. 16 Wisconsin-Whitewater, but it bounced back to post consecutive matches in the 960s and beat Kentucky Wesleyan (967-909) and Spalding (969-773). YSU lost 937-865 to No. 1 McKendree in the final match of the day.
Youngstown State will bowl in three best-of-seven Baker bracket matches on Sunday as it tries to continue to move up the standings. The Penguins will take on LIU to start the day at 9:30 a.m. Eastern.
