The Youngstown State bowling team went 1-2 in bracket play on Sunday at the Columbia 300 Music City Classic and finished the tournament in 18th place. Vanderbilt hosted the event at the Smyrna Bowling Center in Smyrna, Tenn.
The Penguins began the day in 17th place, and they dropped one spot in what was their final regular-season tournament.
"This team faces adversity like no group I have ever seen," said YSU head coach Doug Kuberski. "I'm so proud of them for how they navigated a tough weekend. They did it together, and with class. Given how we've continually bounced back all season, I see us doing special things in Houston in two weeks."
The No. 7 Penguins lost their opening match 4-0 to No. 25 LIU, but they battled back and outlasted No. 18 Adelphi in seven games to even their record on the day. YSU finished off the Panthers with 220 and 244 games after being down 3-2 in the match.
Youngstown State then built a 3-2 lead on No. 16 Wisconsin-Whitewater, but the Warhawks won the final two games to win the match 4-3. YSU had to take zeroes in the fourth and ninth frames in each of the last two games due to an inadvertent rule violation involving the use of a practice pair.
YSU will look to regroup over the next 11 days before it begins play in the Southland Bowling League Championships on March 20 in Conroe, Texas. The seedings for the tournament will be released this week, and the Penguins will look to win the event for an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.
