Bowling Battles Through Splits on Opening Day in Tennessee

The Youngstown State bowling team endured a rough day on the lanes as a hoard of splits slowed their scoring pace on Friday at the Columbia 300 Music City Classic. The tournament is being held at the Smyrna Bowling Center in Smyrna, Tenn., and Vanderbilt is serving as the host.
The No. 7 Penguins went 1-4 in their head-to-head Baker matches on the opening day, and they sit 22nd in total pinfall with two days remaining. Youngstown State topped 880 three times on the day and totaled 4,306 pins in their five matches.
"The ladies hung tough and battled, and I'm super proud of the effort," YSU head coach Doug Kuberski said. "Today is on me. I've got to be better tomorrow for the ladies. With the information gained today, I'm looking forward to a new day tomorrow. If any group can rebound from a rough start, it's this one. We will bring it to the lanes tomorrow and enjoy the challenge."
Youngstown State won its opening match 814-661 against Elmhurst, but the low score was an unfortunate preview of what the rest of the day would hold. In total, YSU had nearly 40 splits in their 25 Baker games, and Kuberski said many were undeserved from shots in the pocket. After the win over Elmhurst, YSU fell 951-901 to No. 19 Maryville, 934-880 to No. 20 Tulane, 963-822 to No. 5 Arkansas State and 980-884 to No. 11 Louisiana Tech.
Youngstown State will have an opportunity to bounce back on Saturday as it bowls five traditional games beginning at 10:30 a.m. Eastern.
