Boiling Springs, N.C. -- Maddi Lusk went 3-for-3 with home run, two runs scored and two RBI and picked up the save as the Youngstown State softball defeated Maryland-Eastern Shore, 5-2, on Saturday. The Penguins lost their first game of the season after falling to Gardner-Webb, 5-3.

Sophomore Kayla Rutherford picked up her first career win with seven strikeouts in five inninings pitched.

Lusk drove in Tatum Christy with a single to tie the game at 1-1 in the top of the third. The Penguins took the lead on Grace Cea's sacrifice fly that plated Yazmine Romero, who went 2-for-4. Nikki Saibene gave the Penguins a 3-1 lead with a single that plated Lusk.

After allowing a run in the bottom of the fourth, the Penguins tacked on two more in the top of the seventh when Hailey Roach scored on an error and Lusk's first home run of the season.

In the nightcap, the Penguins tallied just three hits and committed three errors in the 5-3 loss.

Alex DeLeon went 2-for-2 with two runs batted in. Elle Buffenbarger fanned 10 batters in six innings but picked up the loss.

The Penguins close out the tournament against Canisius, Sunday, at 10 a.m.
