The Youngstown State women's basketball team dropped a 67-54 decision to Wright State on Thursday evening at Beeghly Center.
The Penguins fall to 11-12 overall and 4-8 in the Horizon League while the Raiders improve to 13-10 overall and 8-4 in the league.
Junior McKenah Peters was the lone player in double figures for the Penguins with 17 points while Quinece Hatcher had nine and Jen Wendler and Chelsea Olson had eight each.
Wright State, which had 23 offensive rebounds that led to 27 second-chance points, had four players score in double figures. Angel Baker scored a team-best 13 points while Michal Miller had 12, and Shammare Hale and Anisja Harris scored 10 apiece.
Wright State led by as much as 21 points in the third quarter, and Youngstown State trimmed the margin down to seven midway through the fourth.
The Raiders outscored the Penguins 19-7 in the second quarter to extend a one-point first quarter edge to a 34-21 halftime advantage. The Raiders made three 3-pointers, grabbed eight offensive rebounds that led to nine second-chance points, and held the Penguins to just three field goals and a free throw in the second period
After a Wright State basket to start the fourth quarter put the Raiders up 16, Youngstown State went on an 8-0 run to get within eight. Olson started the run with a made free throw while Ny'Dajah Jackson added a layup and Peters converted an old-fashioned three-point play to cut the Raiders lead to 10, 53-43, with 8:28 to go. Jackson added another jumper to get the Penguins within eight, 53-45.
Olson's 3-pointer at the 4:39 mark made it a seven-point game before the Raiders scored the next six points to extend the lead back to 13, 63-50. Baskets by Wendler and Olson got the Penguins within nine, but they would not get any closer.
Wright State scored the 10 of the first 12 points to start the second half to build its lead to a game-high 21 points, 44-23, midway through the third. After a 3-pointer by Alexis Stover, the Raiders owned a 50-29 lead, but a pair of free throws by Olson and 3-pointers by Mady Aulbach and Peters got the Penguins within 14.
In the first quarter, the Penguins had five turnovers that led to four Wright State points and made just five field goals. The Raiders also scored six second-chance points after grabbing six offensive rebounds.
Peters hit a 3-pointer to get within one, 4-3, but the Raiders went on a 7-2 run to extend the lead to 11-5 with 4:44 left in the period. Peters added another jumper at the 2:43 mark to get YSU within four, 11-7.
A pair of free throws by Wendler and a 3-pointer by Maddie Schires capped a 7-2 YSU run and cut the Raiders' lead to 13-12 with 1:28 left. Wright State's Hale and YSU's Hatcher each hit baskets to close out the first quarter with Wright State holding a 15-14 edge.
The Penguins will host Northern Kentucky on Saturday at 1 p.m.
