Box Score Charleston, S.C. - The Youngstown State baseball team dropped a 14-4 decision to the College of Charleston on Saturday afternoon at The Ballpark at Patriots Point.
The Penguins took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning before the Cougars plated two runs in the third, six in the fourth and six in the sixth to secure a 2-0 series lead. YSU falls to 2-3 overall with the loss while CofC improves to 4-1.
Jeff Wehler went 2-for-4 with a two-run double and a stolen base while Nick Caruso was 2-for-3 with a pair of singles for the Penguins. Blaze Glenn singled, stole a base and scored a run. Andre Good drove in a run with a sacrifice fly and notched his first-career steal.
College of Charleston outhit Youngstown State 10-5 as seven different Cougars recorded at least one hit. Ari Sechopoulos went 2-for-4 with a double, a triple, three RBIs and two runs scored while Harrison Hawkins and Landon Choboy each had two hits as well.
The Penguins jumped in front with a two-run double by Wehler in the top of the third inning. Wehler was thrown out trying to stretch the play into a triple after driving in Caruso and Turner Grau. Caruso began the inning with a single and Grau reached on a fielder's choice.
The Cougars responded immediately in the home half of the third as Trotter Harlan hit a two-out, two-run home run to left field that evened the score at 2-2.
College of Charleston added to its lead with six runs, four of them unearned, on three hits and four YSU errors in the bottom of the fourth inning. Hawkins reached on an error to begin the frame and scored on an RBI triple to left field by Sechopoulos. Sechopoulos then scored on another YSU error, and Donald Hansis followed with a two-run homer to right field. A two-run single by Luke Stageberg later in the inning pushed the Cougars' lead to 8-2.
The Penguins would draw closer in the top of the sixth inning as Wehler hit a leadoff single and Glenn drew a one-out walk. Following a successful double-steal attempt, Wehler advanced home on a throwing error by CofC catcher Jared Kirven. Glenn then scored on a sacrifice fly from Good to cut the deficit to 8-4.
However, the Cougars answered again, this time with six runs on three hits and three walks, in the bottom of the sixth to pull away and produce the final margin of 14-4. CofC loaded the bases with two base on balls and a hit batter, and Stageberg walked with the bases loaded for the first run of the inning. Hawkins, Sechopoulos and Choboy each added run-scoring doubles later in the frame.
YSU starter Collin Floyd was saddled with his first loss after allowing eight runs, only four of them earned, on seven hits over four innings. Grant Kersh, Nathan Ball and Zack Minney were each responsible for two runs in relief. Casey Marshalwitz did allow a hit and fanned three batters over two scoreless innings in his first collegiate appearance.
CofC starter Caswell Smith surrendered three runs, two of them earned, on four hits and struck out five over five innings in a winning effort. Josh Price allowed one unearned run in the sixth before Austin George, Grant Smith and Emmett Bice each worked a scoreless inning.
