Toledo, Ohio - The Youngstown State men's tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision to Toledo on Saturday afternoon at the Shadow Valley Tennis Club.
Vasilis Vardakis and Erik Gran earned singles wins for the Penguins in a tough loss. Four of the six singles matches lasted three sets while the doubles point came down to the No. 2 spot after the Penguins and Rockets (6-6) each had a doubles win.
In doubles, the Penguins earned a win at No. 3 as Gran and Larentiu Mandocescu picked up a 6-2 win. The Rockets claimed a win at No. 1 doubles before earning the point with a 6-4 win at No. 2.
In singles, the matches at No. 2, No. 3, No. 4 and No. 6 all went three sets.
At No. 2, Joao Garretto dropped a 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 contest to Krzysztof Wetoszka. At No. 3, Mandocescu dropped a 6-2, 1-6, 6-2 decision to Cole Shoults. Gran earned a win for the Penguins at No. 4 singles taking his match 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 from Thawin Suksathaporn. At No. 6, Pol Virgili Blanco lost a tough 6-1, 2-6, 6-1 bout to Filip Zupancic.
Vardakis won his match in straight sets at No. 1 defeating Danilo Vukotic, 7-5, 6-3.
The Penguins (3-4) are next in action on Friday when they visit Western Michigan. First serve is set for 11 a.m.
