Cleveland, Ohio -- The Youngstown State men's basketball team dropped an 87-69 decision to Cleveland State on Saturday afternoon at the Wolstein Center.
The Penguins fall to 4-2 overall and 1-2 in the Horizon League while the Vikings improve to 3-3 overall and 3-0 in the league.
Leading the Penguins was freshman Shemar Rathan-Mayes with 17 points and senior Garrett Covington with 13.
Cleveland State was led by Torrey Patton with 17 points, D'Moi Hodge with 14 points and Chris Greene with 13 points.
The Vikings shot 68 percent from the floor and made six 3-pointers in the second half and finished the game shooting 55.4 percent from the floor.
Youngstown State was limited to 33.3 percent shooting from the floor.
The Penguins jumped out to a fast start in the first 10 minutes of the game and led by eight, 19-11, with 9:40 left in the first. Rathan-Mayes sparked the Penguins with 11 of 19 points.
Cleveland State went on an 10-0 run over the next three minutes to take a 21-19 lead. Rathan-Mayes hit a 3-pointer to put the Penguins up, 22-21, but the Vikings would outscore YSU 17-6 to close out the half and take a 38-28 into the lockerroom.
The Penguins and Vikings close out the two-game series on Sunday. Tipoff is at 1 p.m. at the Wolstein Center.
