Vestal, N.Y. - Junior Darius Quisenberry became the 38th player in school history to score 1,000 career points as the YSU men's basketball team came back to defeat Binghamton, 79-65, on Sunday afternoon at Dr. Bai Lee Court at the Events Center.
Senior Naz Bohannon led the Penguins with 23 points while Quisenberry scored 17, senior Michael Akuchie had a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds and senior Garrett Covington added 11 points.
The Penguins (2-0) outscored the Bearcats (0-3) 48-27 in the second half. YSU trailed by as many as 15 points in the contest before pulling away in the final eight minutes after breaking a 53-all tie on the Quisenberry 3-pointer that gave him his 1,000th career point.
Bohannon had a big first half for the Guins with 17 of YSU's 31 points. He drained a 3-pointer just before the buzzer that seemed to spark the Guins going into the intermission.
Trailing 34-19 with 4:15 left, YSU closed out the half on a 12-4 run to trim the deficit to seven, 38-31.
In the second half, the Penguins clawed their way back into game by getting the deficit down to one twice - 49-48 and 51-50 - after a pair of baskets by Bohannon.
After a Bearcats basket, Quisenberry tied the game at 53-53 with a 3 and gave the Penguins a 56-53 edge with another 3-pointer. The second 3 pushed him over the 1,000 point plareau.
Quisenberry hit his third 3-pointer of the game and freshman Shemar Rathan-Mayes and Covington each made a 3-pointer to extend the YSU lead to 73-60 2:03 left. Akuchie and Covington added two more baskets to push the lead to 17.
It marked the third straight season that the Penguins defeated Binghamton.
Youngstown State hosts West Virginia Tech, Monday, at 4 p.m. at Beeghly Center.
