Wrenn, Dockery Place in Top Five as Penguins Stay Atop Standings

Two Youngstown State bowlers placed in the top five individually, and the Penguins finished with the top qualifying score through two days at the Red Flash Invitational. The tournament is being hosted by Saint Francis U at Holiday Bowl in Altoona, Pa.
After posting 319 more pins than any other team in the field in five Baker matches on Friday, the Penguins built on their lead during their five traditional matches on Saturday by posting 4,640 pins. They will hold the top seed for the best-of-seven bracket play on Sunday.
Sophomore Emma Wrenn finished second individually with a five-game total of 990, and junior teammate Emma Dockery placed fifth with a 950. Both Penguins earned all-tournament team accolades. Nikki Mendez finished 11th with a total of 925, and the other five YSU bowlers who traveled to the tournament competed in the other two spots in the lineup.
"I'm proud of our effort and can't wait to take the lanes with the ladies tomorrow," YSU head coach Doug Kuberski said. "We made some mistakes out there today, but I love the way we bounced back from them and battled from the first shot to the last. Our energy is strong and positive heading into tomorrow."
Youngstown State lost its opening match of the day 942-923 in a positional round against No. 13 Mount St. Mary's, and it followed that with three straight wins over Penn State-Altoona (936-663), Mount Aloysius (912-883) and La Roche (1,004-689). Wrenn bowled a 233 and Dockery posted a 224 in the match against La Roche, which were the top two individual games of the day for the Penguins. YSU dropped its final match 875-865 to Walsh.
Youngstown State will begin bracket play against second-seeded Mount St. Mary's, which went unbeaten in the two days of qualifying, at 8 a.m. If the Penguins beat the Mountaineers, they will have a bye before competing in a match for their third tournament title of the season. If YSU loses its opening bout, it will bowl against either Saint Francis U or Morgan State for another chance to advance to the title match.
