Penguins Break Single-Game Record, Finish Third at Red Flash Invitational

The Youngstown State bowling team continued to battle tough lane conditions on Sunday and finished the Red Flash Invitational in third place. The tournament was held at Holiday Bowl in Altoona, Pa.
The Penguins held the top seed heading into bracket play, but they were beaten twice to start the day before winning its final match. YSU received a third-place trophy to add to its collection for the season, adding to the two championship awards it received the first two weeks of the season. Youngstown State also set a school record for highest Baker game in program history with a 260 against Walsh in the final match of the day.
"I'm so proud of this group. This may have been our best performance of the season," YSU head coach Doug Kuberski said. "To average what we did on those conditions, to lead by over 300 pins, to compete hard and make shots, was impressive. It is an honor to coach this group. We will use the next two weeks to get stronger, work hard, and be at our best heading into the home stretch of our schedule."
The Penguins lost 4-2 in the best-of-seven Baker format to tournament champion Mount St. Mary's to start the day, and another six-game loss to host Saint Francis U followed. Youngstown State won its final match is six games over Walsh, and the Penguins posted scores of 260 and 243 in the victory. The 260 was the highest game posted by the fourth-year program regardless of format.
Youngstown State's next tournament will be in three weeks at the Mid-Winter Invitational in Jonesboro, Ark. It will begin a big stretch for the Penguins to close out the regular season as they will compete in tournaments hosted by No. 4 Arkansas State, No. 3 Nebraska and No. 5 Vanderbilt in a four-week span.
