Bowling Posts Three Wins on First Day at Red Flash Invitational

The Youngstown State bowling team went 3-1 in head-to-head matches and finished the first day of the Red Flash Invitational at the top of the team standings. The tournament is being hosted by Saint Francis U in Altoona, Pa., at Holiday Bowl.
The Penguins dropped their opening match 882-837 to No. 13 Mount St. Mary's, but they won their final three contested matches and competed against the bye in the fifth round of the day. Youngstown State totaled 4,767 pins to sit first ahead second-place Mount St. Mary's, which had 4,448 pins.
"The ladies did an excellent job bouncing back from a start and bowling four great sets," YSU head coach Doug Kuberski said. "All eight Penguins stepped up big time on a very challenging lane condition. We'll look to keep the positive energy and momentum flowing into the weekend.
After losing to the Mountaineers, YSU built momentum for with a 1,010-841 win over host Saint Francis U in which the Penguins topped 200 three times. Youngstown State beat Felician 934-686, and a 1,020-815 victory over Morgan State followed. All eight Penguins who traveled competed against Morgan State, and YSU bowled at least 184 in all five games. The Penguins totaled 966 in their non-contested match, and the group of Nikki Mendez, Megan Grams, Alexis Sullivan, Sarah Florence and Ashley Kolb posted the highest game of the day with a 238.
Youngstown State will compete in five team games on Saturday beginning at 10 a.m. The Penguins will bowl Mount St. Mary's again in a positional round, followed by contests against Penn State-Altoona, Mount Aloysius, La Roche and Walsh.
