Penguins Show Resilience But Fall Twice in Doubleheader at No. 6 Florida State

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Tallahassee, Fla. - The Youngstown State baseball team showed resilience with a competitive effort in the series finale, but dropped both games of a doubleheader against No. 6/11 Florida State at Dick Howser Stadium on Saturday.

The Penguins jumped in front of the Seminoles in both games before falling 24-2 in seven innings in game one and 7-4 in game two. YSU responded to a tough first game of the day with a spirited effort in game two as Florida State did not grab its first lead until the sixth inning.

In six road games against two top-10 nationally ranked opponents to begin the season, YSU held leads in five of them. The Penguins dropped to 0-6 on the season while the Seminoles improved to 7-0.

Game 1 | PDF Box Score

The Penguins took an early lead in game one of Saturday's doubleheader, but the Seminoles used a seven-run first inning to take control on their way to a 24-2 win in seven innings.

Blaze Glenn drove in both YSU runs with a sacrifice fly in the top of the first and an RBI single in fourth. The Penguins were held to four hits as Jeff Wehler doubled and Phillip Glasser and Steven D'Eusanio each singled.

Florida State recorded 18 hits in the contest including 11 of the extra-base variety and six home runs. The Seminoles were led by Robby Martin who went 4-for-4 with a single, two doubles, a home run and six RBIs.

Lucas Nasonti was hit by a pitch to lead off the game and came around to score on Glenn's sacrifice fly to left that put YSU ahead 1-0.

The Seminoles used three home runs and a three-run triple in the home half of the first to answer with seven runs, and move in front for good. After adding a run in the second, FSU plated four the third, three in the fourth and nine in the sixth.

The Penguins' second run came in the top of the fourth when Wehler hit a leadoff double down the left field line and was driven home by Glenn. Later in the inning, Glenn was caught stealing for the first time in YSU career; he was a perfect 16-for-16 in stolen base attempts last season. The junior actually beat the throw easily but was tagged as the momentum from his slide took him off second base.

Jon Snyder suffered his second loss of the season while FSU starter CJ Van Eyk earned his second win. Van Eyk allowed two runs on three hits and fanned six batters over five innings.

Game 2 | PDF Box Score

Youngstown State held another early edge in game two with a three-run first inning, and took a 4-2 lead into the bottom of the fifth inning. However, the Penguins' bats went cold and the Seminoles scored five runs over their final four at bats to complete the series sweep with a 7-4 victory.

Wehler hit his first home run of the season while Glenn doubled, walked twice and scored two runs. Drew Dickerson singled and drove in a run while Trevor Wiersma drew three base on balls.

YSU starter Chad Coles provided a very solid effort, allowing three runs and scattering four hits over four innings in a no-decision.

After scoring three runs on three hits in the top of the first, YSU did not record a hit for the remainder of the contest. The Penguins drew seven walks but struck out 12 times and were retired in order in five different innings.

Florida State had just seven hits after collecting 18 in game one, but YSU pitchers issued a total of 12 free passes in the nightcap.

Dennis drew a leadoff walk to begin the game and scored on the next pitch as Wehler put the Penguins ahead with a two-run home run to left field. Glenn followed with a double and would come around to score on a throwing error to push the lead to 3-0.

Florida State used an RBI single from Martin in the bottom of the first and a solo homer by Matheu Nelson in the second to close the gap to 3-2 after two frames. With the bases loaded in the first, Dennis made an impressive sliding play at shortstop to turn a 6-4-3 double play and avoid further damage.

Glenn, Wiersma and Nick LaBrasca drew three consecutive one-out walks in the top of the fifth inning to load the bases. Dickerson followed with a sacrifice fly to right to push the Penguins' lead to 4-2.

The Seminoles manufactured two runs on two hits in the bottom of the fifth to tie the contest at 4-4. Nico Baldor drove in a run on a groundout and Nelson brought home the tying run on a sacrifice bunt.

Florida State loaded the bases with three one-out walks in the bottom of the sixth before a sacrifice fly by Martin gave the Seminoles their first lead of the game at 5-4. FSU added two insurance runs in the eighth on a two-run single by J.C. Flowers to account for the final margin.

Martin led his team once again at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored.

Shane Drohan was awarded the win after giving up one run and striking out three in 2.1 innings out of the bullpen. Chase Haney sat down a pair during a perfect ninth to earn the save.

Greg Dunham surrendered three runs on two hits over 2.1 innings of relief in his first loss of the season.

The Penguins will return to action March 1 to begin a three-game series at Tennessee Tech.
