The Youngstown State women's basketball team tied the school record for most 3-pointers in a game with 16 and beat Muskingum 92-46 at the Seventh Annual Chick-Fil-A School Field Trip Game on Friday morning at Beeghly Center.
The win over the Division III Fighting Muskies in the final non-conference game of the season gave the Penguins a 7-4 record as they head home for Christmas break.
YSU's 16 3-pointers were its most ever at Beeghly Center, and it tied the school record that was set previously in road games at Oakland in 2015 and at Loyola Chicago in 2012. The 16 3s were also the second-most made in the building's history behind only the YSU men's basketball team's 18 treys in the College Invitational Tournament game against Oakland in 2013.
Youngstown State attempted 40 3-pointers, which was the fourth-most in program history, as Muskingum played zone defense and doubled post touches consistently.
Freshman Maddie Schires went 5-for-10 from 3-point range and finished with a game-high 15 points, and Mady Aulbach, McKenah Peters and Taylor Petit each made three 3s. Chelsea Olson and Ny'Dajah Jackson each made one triple. Petit, Peters and Jackson each finished with 11 points, and Quinece Hatcher posted a career-best 13 points while going 6-of-7 from the field
Sam Filiaggi and Olivia Lang scored eight points apiece to lead Muskingum.
The Penguins made their first five attempts from beyond the arc, and Olson's triple at the 5:15 mark put YSU ahead 17-8. Olson then made two free throws two minutes later to give YSU its first double-digit lead at 21-11, and the Penguins led 23-11 at the end of the period.
Youngstown State made three of its final four attempts from 3-point range in the second period, and Aulbach's triple in the final seconds of the half gave the Penguins a 45-27 lead.
YSU was 9-for-20 from beyond the arc in the first half, and it went 5-for-12 in the third period as it outscored the Fighting Muskies 29-11. Schires' 3-pointer at the 8:50 mark of the fourth period was YSU's 15th of the game, which tied the previous mark at home, and she made another with 7:24 remaining that tied the program record. The Penguins were 0-for-4 from beyond the arc the rest of the game.
Youngstown State shot 46.4 percent for the game, going 16-for-29 inside the arc and 16-for-40 beyond it. The Penguins also converted 12-of-14 attempts from the free-throw line. Muskingum shot 37.3 percent and was 6-for-21 from 3-point range.
Youngstown State had 26 assists on 32 baskets and registered a season-best 14 steals. Those 14 steals contributed to Muskingum turning the ball over 26 times, which led to a 30-4 edge in points off turnovers for the Penguins.
Youngstown State will begin Horizon League play by hosting IUPUI at Beeghly Center on Dec. 28 at 1 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on 1390 WNIO and ESPN+.
