Cedar Falls, Iowa - The 17th-ranked Youngstown State football team kept battling, but could not rally falling to No. 13 UNI 21-14 at the UNI-Dome on Saturday afternoon.
The Penguins suffered their first loss of the year falling to 4-1 overall and 0-1 in the MVFC. UNI improves to 3-2 and 1-0.
YSU trailed throughout the contest, but kept trying to battle back. However, they were not able to catch the Panthers.
UNI jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first quarter when Will McElvain connected with Isiah Weston on a 39-yard touchdown pass.
With 5:07 left in the second quarter, the Panthers extended their lead to 14-0 on a 10-yard run by Trevor Allen.
The Penguins needed just 11 seconds to answer the UNI score as Nathan Mays found Jermiah Braswell down the near sidelines for a 75-yard scoring play following the kickoff.
The Panthers came right back to build a 21-7 lead with 1:12 left in the second quarter. On first-and-goal from the 15-yard line, Tyler Hoosman burst straight up the middle for a score to giving UNI a 21-7 lead.
YSU took the opening possession of the second half and pulled within a touchdown when Mays connected with Kendric Mallory for a 14-yard touchdown. YSU moved the ball 75 yards in eight plays before Mallory walked the tightrope into the end zone.
From that point it was a defensive battle.
The Penguins return home to face South Dakota State in the annual Homecoming game next Saturday at Stambaugh Stadium. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
