Penguins Drop Both Games of Doubleheader with Milwaukee

The Youngstown State baseball team dropped decisions of 5-0 and 6-1 in a doubleheader with Milwaukee on Saturday at Eastwood Field. The Penguins played as the road team in each game as the series was moved to Ohio due to bad weather in the Milwaukee area.

Game One | PDF Box Score

The Penguins were limited to just two hits in a 5-0 loss to the Panthers in game one of Saturday's doubleheader.

Austin Schulfer struck out nine batters on his way to earning the win in a complete-game shutout. Greg Dunham took the loss for YSU after allowing four runs, three of them earned, on nine hits and striking out seven over seven innings of work.

Trey Bridis and Blaze Glenn each singled in the game for the Penguins. Devin Rybacki went 4-for-5 with two RBIs to lead Milwaukee offensively. Mitch Buban was 3-for-4 with a double while Ben Chally had a pair of base hits and drove in a run.

The Panthers took an early lead on a two-out RBI single by Chally in the bottom of the first inning and plated another run in the bottom of the third to go in front 2-0. Milwaukee went on to add three runs on four hits in the bottom of the eighth to produce the final score of 5-0.

Game Two | PDF Box Score

The Panthers scored six runs on just six hits in a 6-1 victory to sweep the doubleheader.

Bridis, Glenn, Jeff Wehler and Nick Massey each singled for YSU while Austin Trace had an RBI double. Wehler also stole a pair of bases in the contest.

The Panthers broke a scoreless tie with four runs on four hits in the bottom of the fourth inning. Trevor Schwecke hit a two-run single and Tyler Bordner sent a two-run home run over the wall in left field which gave UWM a 4-0 advantage.

Milwaukee added two runs in the bottom of the eighth as Rybacki led off the frame with a double and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt. Schwecke then reached on an error, allowing Rybacki to score. Schwecke would come around to score on a wild pitch later in the inning to make it 6-0.

YSU scored its only run in the top of the ninth inning when Trace hit a one-out double down the left field line which drove in Drew Dickerson, who had reached on an error.

Jake Sommers picked up the win for UWM after surrendering just three hits and striking out eight over seven shutout innings.

Collin Floyd was saddled with the loss after giving up four runs on five hits and fanning six over seven innings. Floyd held the Panthers without a hit through his first three innings and retired the side in order in four different frames. Outside of Milwaukee's four-run fourth, he held the Panthers to one hit and no runs over his other six innings on the mound.

The Penguins and Panthers will conclude their three-game series tomorrow afternoon. First pitch for the series finale at Eastwood Field is scheduled for 12 p.m.
