Penguins Take Early Lead But Fall 12-3 at Ohio State

The Youngstown State baseball team took an early lead before falling 12-3 to Ohio State at Bill Davis Stadium on Wednesday.

Blaze Glenn led the Penguins offensively, going 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Austin Trace and Nick LaBrasca each doubled in the game as well after coming off the bench.

The Penguins jumped in front by scoring two runs in the top of the first inning. Nick Massey led off the game with a walk, Trey Bridis was hit by a pitch and Glenn hit a one-out single to load the bases for Drew Dickerson. Dickerson delivered an RBI single to center field which scored Massey. Later in the frame, Trace reached on a fielding error which allowed Bridis to score.

The Buckeyes responded by scoring three runs in the bottom of the first with the help of four walks and a wild pitch. Noah McGowan drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, Brady Cherry scored on a wild pitch and Nate Romans walked with the bases loaded to give Ohio State a 3-2 lead.

The Buckeyes went on to score three runs in the third and fourth innings to extend their advantage to 9-2 and held the Penguins without a run until the top of the eighth.

Massey and Lucas Nasonti drew back-to-back, one-out walks in the eighth and each advanced 90 feet on a passed ball. Glenn then brought home Massey with a two-out, RBI single to left field. Ohio State plated one run in the sixth and two in the eighth to produce the final score of 12-3.

The Buckeyes recorded 14 hits in the game, led by McGowan and Dillon Dingler with two apiece.

Austin Woodby earned the win for Ohio State after pitching two scoreless innings of relief while Kip DeShields took the loss for the Youngstown State.

The Penguins will return to action with a three-game, Horizon League series at Milwaukee which is scheduled to begin on Friday at 4 p.m. ET.
