Kent State scored the final seven runs of the game to defeat the Youngstown State baseball team 7-2 in seven innings on Tuesday at Schoonover Stadium.
The Penguins led 2-0 after two innings, but they were held without a hit over the final four frames as the Golden Flashes rallied. Kent State scored three runs in the third and two runs in both the fourth and sixth innings. The teams agreed before first pitch to play a shortened game with temperatures hovering around 40 degrees.
Lucas Nasonti doubled, and Trey Bridis and Drew Dickerson both singled for the Penguins. Leadoff batter Greg Lewandoski paced the Golden Flashes with three hits, two RBIs and a run scored.
The Penguins' two runs both came in the second inning with the help of some wildness by Kent State's pitching staff. Blaze Glenn walked and Andrew Kendrick was hit by a pitch to start the inning, and Dickerson's single that was the only hit in the inning loaded the bases with nobody out. Web Charles drew a one-out walk to bring in Glenn, and Nick Massey followed with a sacrifice fly that plated Kendrick to put the Penguins up 2-0.
YSU starter Colin Clark protected the lead by retiring Kent State in order in the second, but he ran into trouble in the third as the Golden Flashes scored three runs on four hits. The Golden Flashes added two runs in the fourth on an RBI triple by Michael Turner and an RBI single by Josh Hollander. They then extended the lead with two runs on a single by Lewandoski in the sixth.
Youngstown State will play at Toledo on Wednesday at 3:05 p.m.
