Quinlan Goes the Distance Again as Penguins Split with Milwaukee

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Jeremy Quinlan pitched a five-hit complete game for his second straight home start to lead the Youngstown State baseball team to a 5-1 victory over Milwaukee on Saturday at Eastwood Field. The Penguins lost game one of the doubleheader 5-2.

Quinlan allowed five singles in the game, and the Panthers' only run came on a wild pitch with two outs in the top of the second. The Penguins struck for two runs on four hits in the bottom of the inning to pick him up, and Quinlan cruised for the final seven innings.

The senior right-hander from Brookfield, Ohio, finished with seven strikeouts, and he did not walk a batter. He retired the final 11 hitters he faced, and he allowed only three baserunners over the final seven innings. Each of those runners were immediately retired on 5-4-3 double plays. Quinlan faced two batters over the minimum and made quick work of the Panthers, needing only 102 pitches and 2:11 to improve to 3-0 in six Horizon League starts.

With the Penguins down 1-0 heading into the bottom of the second, Alex Larivee and Trey Bridis led off the bottom of the inning with back-to-back singles. Lou Cardona singled two batters later to load the bases. Kyle Benyo's sacrifice fly tied the game at 1-1, and Nico Padovan followed with an RBI single to give Quinlan a lead he went on to protect.

The only other runs in the game came in the bottom of the fourth as YSU scored three runs on five hits. Larivee again led off with a single, and Bridis followed with an RBI triple to right center. Web Charles singled in Bridis, and he scored on another RBI single by Padovan as the Penguins went ahead 5-1.

Padovan, Larivee, Bridis, Charles and Cardona each had two hits in game two as YSU finished with 13 as a team.

In game one, Milwaukee's Jay Peters went the distance and held the Penguins without an earned run. He surrendered four hits and struck out eight batters in the 5-2 victory.

The Panthers scored once in the second, sixth and seventh innings to take a 3-0 lead before the Penguins got on the board. Anthony Rohan reached on an error to start the inning, and Shane Willoughby's single put runners at the corners. Willoughby advanced on a wild pitch, and Bridis' two-run single to left with two outs made the score 3-2.

Mike Ferri hit a big pinch-hit, two-run single with two outs in the eighth to give the Panthers their three-run cushion back, and Peters set YSU down in order in the final two innings.

Youngstown State will play at Canisius on Tuesday before returning home to host a three-game series with Valparaiso next weekend.
