Floyd, Bullpen Pitch Three-Hit Shutout as YSU Splits Doubleheader at UIC

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Collin Floyd, Joel Hake and Kevin Yarabinec combined for a three-hit shutout to lead the Youngstown State baseball team to a 1-0 victory at UIC in game two of a doubleheader on Sunday at Curtis Granderson Stadium. The Penguins lost game one 7-2.

Floyd pitched the first six innings and allowed three hits and three walks while striking out three batters. Hake struck out two batters in a scoreless seventh inning, and Yarabinec struck out three and did not allow a base-runner in the six-out save.

Youngstown State had just four hits in the win, and a UIC error in the sixth inning helped the run come across. Alex Larivee led off with a single, which was YSU's second hit of the game at the time, and he moved to second on Andrew Kendrick's groundout. A throwing error by Flames pitcher Mitchell Schulewitz allowed Larivee to go to third, and Gerrad Rohan followed with a sacrifice fly.

Floyd retired 11 straight batters before a one-out walk in the fifth to Scott Ota. Ota was stranded on third, and he was the only Flames batter to go beyond second base. Hunter Snyder threw out the lead runner on a double-steal attempt with one out in the sixth as UIC tried to get two men in scoring position.

Snyder had two hits in the game, including YSU's first that came with two outs in the fifth.

Game one started out as a pitchers' duel as both YSU's Michael Semonsen and UIC's Jake Dahlberg did not allow a hit through three innings. Dahlberg extended his streak to the fifth, but the Flames got to Semonsen with four hits that led to four runs in the bottom of the fourth.

Dahlberg issued back-to-back one-out walks in the fifth, and Anthony Rohan plated Jonny Miller on YSU's first hit to make the score 4-1. Kendrick doubled and scored a batter later on Gerrad Rohan's single in the top of the eighth as YSU got within a pair, but the Flames added three runs in the bottom of the inning for the final tally.

Kendrick finished 2-for-3 in the opener, and Cody Bohanek went 3-for-4 with two runs scored for UIC.

Semonsen had just the one bad inning, finishing the game with four runs on five hits in 6.1 innings. Jared Wight allowed three runs, one of which was earned, in 1.2 innings of relief.

Youngstown State will play six games next week, starting with a contest at Pittsburgh on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
