Quinlan, Two Homers Help Penguins Even Series at Belmont

Box Score

Jeremy Quinlan pitched six strong innings, and the Youngstown State baseball team scored seven runs in the fifth through seventh innings to beat Belmont 7-3 on Saturday afternoon at E.S. Rose Park.

Alex Larivee hit a go-ahead two-run homer in the top of the fifth, and Trey Bridis hit his first career home run in the sixth to put the Penguins up 4-2. The Penguins then added three insurance runs in the seventh, and Jared Wight allowed one run in three innings to earn the save.

The win allowed the Penguins to even the series at 1-1, and the rubber match will be played on Sunday at 2 p.m. Eastern.

Larivee and Gerrad Rohan both had two hits and two RBIs, and Bridis matched them in the hits column.

Quinlan wiggled out of a bases loaded, one-out situation in the bottom of the first inning, and Belmont scored twice in the bottom of the fourth it had runners at the corners with nobody out. A run came in when Quinlan got a 6-4-3 double play, and Tyler Walsh followed with a solo homer to left to put the Bruins up 2-0.

YSU answered with three two-out runs in the top of the fifth, and the Penguins went on to score seven straight runs. Dominic Brown got the offense going with a one-out single, and Hunter Snyder followed by being hit by a pitch. After a ground out, Brown scored on a wild pitch and Larivee hit his two-run home run to left.

Bridis' opposite-field round-tripper with two outs in the sixth put YSU up 4-2, and the Penguins upped their cushion to five runs in the seventh. Lorenzo Arcuri doubled in Brown, and Rohan singled in Arcuri and Larivee.

Belmont's run in the seventh came on a sacrifice fly, and Wight allowed two baserunners in the ninth before getting Friday night's hero, Desi Ammons, to ground out to end the game.

Following Joe King's quality start on Friday, Quinlan allowed six hits and walked four batters while striking out seven over six innings to earn his first win of the season. Wight allowed one run on two hits and struck out three batters.
