The Youngstown State baseball team saw its three-game winning streak come to an end on Wednesday afternoon with a 12-1 loss at Pittsburgh.

The Panthers scored the first four runs of the game, and they scored eight runs off the bullpen after YSU pulled to within 4-1 in the fifth inning.

The Penguins were held to four hits in the game, and Pitt scored its 12 runs on 11 hits and eight walks.

Pitt scored a two-out run in the first inning, and Alex Kowalczyk hit a two-run homer in the third to put the Panthers ahead 4-0.

YSU went without a hit until Josh Fitch doubled to right center to start the fifth, and he scored two batters later on a single by Kevin Hix.

Pitt answered immediately when Boo Vazquez homered to start the fifth, and the Panthers went on to score four runs in the inning. Three of those were unearned as the Penguins committed two errors. Pittsburgh tacked on three runs in the sixth and another in the seventh.

Vazquez finished 3-for-5 with a pair of home runs, three runs scored and four RBIs to pace Pitt. Four different Penguins had hits.

YSU starter Jeremy Quinlan allowed four runs on five hits in three innings, and D.J. Carr and Ryan Smith were also charged with four runs apiece in relief. Three of the runs against Carr were unearned.

Sam Mersing allowed one run on three hits and a walk in six innings to earn his third win of the season for Pittsburgh.

Youngstown State will return to Horizon League play this weekend with a three-game series at Wright State. Game one will be on Friday at 6:30 p.m.
