Ohio Tops Baseball 6-3 at Eastwood Field

Box Score

Ohio rallied with four runs in the sixth inning and had eight pitchers hold Youngstown State to four hits in a 6-3 victory on Tuesday evening at Eastwood Field.

The Bobcats trailed twice in the game, 2-0 and 3-2, but they answered immediately in the next half inning both times to win their 20th game of the season.

Josh Fitch had two hits and scored twice to lead Youngstown State, and Mitch Longo had three of Ohio's 10 hits.

Youngstown State left the bases loaded in the first, but Shane Willoughby came up with a clutch two-out hit in the same situation in the third. Fitch singled with two outs to spark the offense, and Jake Fryman walked and Brent Gillespie was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Willoughby then singled through the left side to plate Fitch and Fryman for the game's first two runs.

YSU starter Josh North didn't allow a hit until an infield single with one out in the fourth, and the Bobcats went on to post three hits in the inning. North got a big strikeout with one out and runners on second and third, but Cody Gaertner's single up the middle tied the score.

YSU regained the lead the next inning when Fitch led off the fifth with a homer, which was the first of his career. That was YSU's last base hit of the game, and Ohio answered the blast to left with four runs in the top of the sixth. Gaertner came up with the big hit again with a two-run double that gave the Bobcats a 4-3 lead, and the visitors added two more runs on an RBI double and an RBI ground out.

Corey Wells, the sixth Ohio pitcher to take the mound, tossed two scoreless innings to earn his first victory. Tom Colletti also pitched two scoreless innings, and Logan Cozart struck out the side in the ninth for his seventh save.

North was charged with all six runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out three in 5.1 innings. Ryan Krokos got the final 11 outs for YSU, allowing three hits and strikout out one.

Youngstown State will play host to Kent State on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
