Baseball Splits Horizon League Opening Doubleheader With Milwaukee

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Westfield, Indiana -- Matt Sullivan hit a three-run homer, and Youngstown State got strong pitching from Jeremy Quinlan and Joe King to earn a doubleheader split with Milwaukee on Saturday afternoon at Grand Park.

The Penguins topped the Panthers 5-3 in the nightcap after dropping the opener 6-5. The doubleheader opened Horizon League play for both teams.

Youngstown State is now 3-6 overall, and Milwaukee, which swept Missouri last weekend, is 9-4.

Quinlan held the Panthers to two runs on six hits and a walk in six innings to earn his second victory of the season, and King did not allow an earned run and yielded just one hit in three innings to record his first career save.

Nick Unes singled in Sam Koenig in the second inning to give Milwaukee a 1-0 lead, but that was the Panthers' only lead of game two.

Sullivan's homer down the right-field line brought in Jonny Miller and Brent Gillespie in the fourth, and both teams scored in the fifth to make the score 4-2. Mitch Ghelfi singled in Derek Peake for UWM, and Alex Larivee doubled and scored on a two-out error for YSU.

Milwaukee scored an unearned run in the top of the seventh to get within one, but YSU answered with an insurance run in the bottom half when Miller singled in Alex Core. King retired the final seven batters he faced.

The Penguins scored five two-out runs in the second inning of game one, but that was the only offense they were able to muster the entire game. Milwaukee scored once in the third, twice in the fourth and once in the fifth to get within one, and the Panthers went ahead with a two-run seventh.

YSU scored all five of its runs off UWM starter Justin Langley, who came into the game with a 3-0 record and a 1.65 ERA. But Langley's relievers backed him up and blanked the Penguins over the final seven innings.

Langley retired the first two Penguins batters in the bottom of the second, but he walked Jason Shirley, Ryan Cordova and Kevin Hix to load the bases. Frank Califano then hit a two-run single to center, and Shane Willoughby followed with a two-run opposite field double to put the Penguins up 4-0 and knock Langley from the game. Lorenzi Arcuri greeted Adam Reuss with a single that plated Willoughby and made the score 5-0.

YSU starter Josh North allowed a run on a hit batsman and three walks in the third, and he issued a walk and an RBI double to Tell Taylor to start the fourth before exiting. Eric Solberg brought the Panthers to within 5-3 on a one-out single.

Tyler Hermann doubled in Ghelfi with one out in the fifth to cut the margin to one, and Hermann and Taylor had RBIs in the seventh that allowed the Panthers to complete the rally.

Reuss was awarded the victory, allowing just three hits and having no runs charged to him in five innings. Cody Peterson recorded the final out of the eighth and pitched the ninth to register his fourth save. Milwaukee's bullpen combined to allow four hits in 7.1 scoreless innings.

The loss was charged to YSU's Ryan Krokos, who allowed the two runs in the seventh. D.J. Carr allowed one run in three innings, and Anthony Konders pitched 2.2 scoreless frames.

The Penguins and Panthers will complete the series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
