Box Score The Youngstown State volleyball team secured the best start in program history with a four-set win over Indiana State on Saturday afternoon at the Duquesne/Robert Morris Invitational. The set scores were 25-22, 26-28, 25-17, 26-24.
Lexi Egler continued her strong weekend with 18 kills and 13 digs, and Sam Brown registered her second straight double-double with 15 kills and 10 digs. The Penguins are now 6-0, topping the previous best start of 5-0 in 2007.
Bree Spangler had 13 kills and 13 digs to lead the Sycamores, who dropped to 5-2.
Youngstown State scored seven straight points behind Egler's serve in the first set to turn a 13-10 deficit into a 17-13 advantage. Indiana State rallied to tie the set at 21 and 22, but an Aly Ryan kill started a three-point Penguins run that finished the set.
Indiana State held off a late Penguins charge and staved off a second point to tie the match at 28-26, but YSU responded with a 25-17 victory in the third set. Egler had six kills in 10 attempts in the set, and YSU scored seven straight points on Val Jeffery's serve to go up 8-4. Egler had three straight kills to push YSU's lead to 17-8.
The Sycamores led by four points on three occasions in the fourth set and held an 18-15 advantage following a block by Kyla Thomas and Victoria Swigart. Back-to-back kills by Lauren Thompson started a six-point run for the Penguins that put them up 21-18, and YSU did not trail again. Egler and Jeffery finished the match with back-to-back kills once Indiana State tied the set at 24.
Jeffery contributed 50 assists and a match-high 18 digs, and Shannon Watson added 11 kills. Ryan posted a match-best seven blocks.
Youngstown State will play Duquesne tonight at 7 p.m.
