Youngstown -- Juniors Cara Armstrong and Chelsey Haney each scored goals to lead the Youngstown State women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Horizon League foe Green Bay on Saturday afternoon at Farmers National Bank Field.
With the win, the Penguins improve to 3-8-1 overall and 1-1 in the Horizon League while Green Bay falls to 4-4-4 overall and 1-1 in the league.
Following a torrential downpour during halftime, Haney capitalized on a breakaway on the left side of the box and buried a shot in the top right corner at the 51:31 mark. It was Haney second goal of the season and her second game-winner this year.
The Penguins took an early 1-0 lead just 12 minutes into the match on an unconventional goal by Cara Armstrong.
After receiving a pass from Allison Ludwig and Kayla Zoccole, Armstrong boomed a towering shot from 40-yards out. The shot landed in the middle of the penalty box and took a huge bounce over the outstretched arms of Green Bay goalkeeper Nastacia Behle.
Green Bay rallied and knotted the game at 1-1 at the 31:25 mark when Hannah Kernen drilled a shot into the top right corner of the net from 20 yards away.
The Penguins outshot the Phoenix, 17-9, while the Phoenix had five corner kicks to YSU's two.
The Penguins visit Oakland, Saturday, Oct. 12, at 7 p.m.
