Kannapolis, N.C. -- The Youngstown State baseball team could not overcome big innings in each of its games at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium, losing 11-1 to Fairfield and 10-3 to Long Island.

Fairfield scored five runs in the sixth to blow open a 2-1 game, and LIU Brooklyn scored nine of its 10 runs in the second inning.

Against Fairfield, four Stags pitchers combined to hold YSU to one hit, which was a single by Phil Lipari that led off the ninth.

Fairfield scored a run in the first and another in the third to go up 2-0, and YSU got its run in the bottom of the third. Jason Shirley and Drew Dosch walked to start the inning, and the pair advanced on a balk. Shirley then scored on a fielder's choice.

Three of the Stags' five runs in the sixth were unearned, and Fairfield added two more runs in both the seventh and ninth innings.

YSU starter Blake Aquadro allowed two runs on four hits and four walks in 4.1 innings in a losing effort. Andrew Gallagher was awarded the win in relief, allowing just two walks in 1.2 innings. He and starter Jeremy Soule combined to allow nine bases on balls in six innings.

Nick Piccirillo and Larry Cornelia both had two hits and four RBIs for Fairfield.

In game two of YSU's doubleheader, LIU Brooklyn scored a run in the first and nine in the second to go up 10-0. After that, YSU relievers Russ Harless and Kevin McCulloh held the Blackbirds scoreless.

LIU Brooklyn scored on a wild pitch in the first, and its nine runs in the second came on five hits, four walks and a hit batsman. Chris Untereiner delivered the biggest blow, a three-run double, and Jesse Brown triple in two runs off reliever Robert Switka. YSU starter Joey Gajda was charged with seven of the runs in the inning, and he exited with two outs and one on. Eight of the runs in the inning came after there were two outs.

Jake Kucek scored on a fielder's choice in the fourth for YSU, and the Penguins had five of their 10 hits in the fifth. Marcus Heath tripled in Jeremy Banks, who singled, and Kucek brought in Heath with a single.

Brad Reimer earned the win for LIU Brooklyn by allowing all three runs on nine hits in five innings.

YSU will play three games at the Austin Peay River View Inn Classic next week.
