Box Score Chicago -- The Youngstown State women's basketball team made a school-record 16 3-pointers, but Loyola went 6-for-6 from the free-throw line in the final minute to hold on for a 78-73 win over the Penguins on Saturday at the Gentile Arena.
Liz Hornberger made YSU's record-breaking 3-pointer at the 1:22 mark, knotting the score at 72 for the ninth tie in the game. The Penguins forced a missed shot on the defensive end, but Simone Law grabbed the offensive rebound and was fouled on a shot attempt. She made both free throws, and Kenya Middlebrooks was blocked by Katie Kortekamp on a 3-point attempt on YSU's possession with under 40 seconds left.
Kortekamp made two free throws with 28.9 seconds left to put Loyola up 76-72, and Kelsea Fickiesen split a pair with 12.7 seconds remaining to make the score 76-73. Kortekamp made two more free throws with 11.6 seconds left to put the game all but out of reach.
Brandi Brown scored 20 points and hit a career-high five 3-pointers, and Middlebrooks added 16 points and four treys. Fickiesen finished with a career-best 13 points, and Macey Nortey had seven assists off the bench.
Troy Hambric scored 14 of her 20 points for Loyola in the first half, and three other Ramblers scored in double figures.
Loyola outshot YSU 50.9 percent to 35.3 percent, but YSU made 10 more 3-pointers. The Ramblers were 16-for-17 from the free-throw line and made their final 15 attempts, including all 10 in the second half. Loyola outscored YSU 34-16 in the paint and 23-10 in fast-break points, but YSU held a 21-11 edge off turnovers.
In a game that featured 12 lead changes, and Loyola's 16-8 lead at the 14:20 mark of the first half was the largest by either team. The Ramblers were up 19-12 following a three-point play by Law at the 13:24 mark, but YSU held them scoreless for five-and-a-half minutes and went on an 11-0 run to go up 23-19 with 8:23 remaining. Brown started the spurt with back-to-back 3-pointers, and a Melissa Thompson triple and Middlebrooks deuce followed.
A Brown free throw made the score 29-27 with 6:03 left, but Loyola outscored YSU 9-4 the rest of the half.
Brown hit a triple with 17:44 remaining in the second half to put YSU up 40-38, and both teams started to go on sizeable runs. Loyola scored the next eight points to go up 46-40, but YSU countered with an 11-point run to go ahead 51-46 with 14:49 remaining. Loyola answered by scoring 11 straight to take a 57-51 lead with 10:47 left, and YSU tied the score again at 60 on a Fickiesen 3-pointer with 6:54 remaining.
YSU led 67-64 after a Heidi Schlegel bucket at the 3:48 mark, but Loyola scored the next six points and never trailed again. Hornberger's 3-pointer with 1:24 remaining tied the score for the final time at 72.
YSU will return home to host Milwaukee on Thursday. The Penguins will participate in the WBCA's Play 4Kay initiative to raise funds and awareness for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund.
