shot 64 percent and ended with a 21-7 run to defeat the Youngstown
State women's basketball team 90-57 on Sunday afternoon at the WVU
Coliseum.
The Mountaineers made eight of its first nine attempts to take
control early and shot at least 62 percent in both halves. YSU was
held to 28 percent but remained competitive until WVU's final run
in the final six minutes.
Heidi
Schlegel led the Penguins (7-3) with 13 points, and Brandi Brown
finished with 12. Amanda Barger went
8-for-8 from the free-throw line for a career-best eight points,
and the Penguins were 20-for-24 as a team.
Taylor Palmer had 15 points to lead five Mountaineers (7-2)
players in double figures. Ayana Dunning added13 points and a
game-high 13 rebounds.
The Penguins trailed by 20 at halftime and by as many as 27
early in the second half, but they battled and trimmed the deficit
to 16 (59-43) with 10:59 remaining on two free throws by Shar'Rae Davis.
WVU scored 10 of the next 12 points to go up 69-45, and Karen Flagg's
three-point play with 7:21 remaining started a five-point run YSU.
That was the Penguins' final field goal of the contest.
Barger made two free throws to make the score 69-50 with 6:38
left. From that point, WVU scored 14 straight points as part of a
21-3 run when reserves were in for both teams.
WVU scored the first five points of the game, and the Penguins
scored on their next two possessions to make the score 5-4. Dunning
hit a deep jumper on WVU's next possession to start a 10-0 run that
put the Mountaineers up 15-4.
A lay-up and free throw by Schlegel cut the deficit to 17-9 with
13:23 remaining, but WVU scored the next seven points to go ahead
24-9. Schlegel and Touvelle both hit 3-pointers in a span of 11
seconds to trim YSU's deficit to 24-15 with just under 10 minutes
left, but the Mountaineers called timeout and proceeded to score
the next 10 points. WVU's largest lead of the period came when a
Palmer jumper at the 1:23 mark put it up 41-20.
After starting 8-of-9 from the field, WVU hit seven straight
field goal attempts at one point in the first half to improve to
16-of-19. A missed 3-pointer at the 15:45 mark was WVU's only miss
in the first seven-and-a-half minutes.
Youngstown State returns home to face Akron on Thursday at 7:05
p.m.
