Chicago -- UIC got strong pitching and game one and scored seven runs in the seventh inning in game two to sweep a doubleheader from the Youngstown State baseball team, 2-0 and 13-8, on Friday at Les Miller Field.

The Penguins finish the regular season with a record of 12-39 and a league mark of 7-16. They will enter next week's Horizon League Baseball Championship as the No. 6 seed and play the third seed on Wednesday at 3 p.m. The tournament will be held at Wright State's Nischwitz Stadium.

In game one, the Penguins' offense couldn't give any support to starting pitcher Robert Switka. Switka, a sophomore righty from Youngstown, allowed two runs on seven hits in 6.2 innings as the hard-luck loser.

The Penguins had just five hits in the contest, and none of those came with a runner in scoring position. YSU had two hits in the first, two more in the third and one in the fifth. The Flames did not issue a walk or commit an error in the contest, and their pitching staff retired the final 13 Penguins hitters.

Andy Leonard and Joe Betcher hit back-to-back one-out doubles in the second to give UIC a 1-0 lead. The other run came one inning later when Matt Serna's two-out double brought in Jason Ganek to put the Flames up two.

The Penguins had only one error in the contest, and the runner that reached was retired immediately. Craig Goubeaux threw out two runners trying to steal second, and Switka caught another breaking toward second.

Jeremy Banks went 2-for-4, and YSU's five hits came from the top four hits in the line-up. The bottom five combined to go 0-for-16.

UIC scored the first four runs of game two, but YSU mounted a comeback in the middle innings. The Flames scored three runs, two of which were unearned, on four hits in the first. Steve McGuiggan's one-out single brought in Jacob McNamara in the second to make the score 4-0.

Drew Dosch hit a ground-rule double with one out in the fourth to plate Banks with YSU's first run, and Goubeaux brought in David Leon with an RBI ground out. UIC, though, matched the Penguins with two runs on two hits in the bottom half of the fourth.

YSU cut the margin to one in the fifth with three runs on four hits. Padraic Williams drew a leadoff walk, and Joe Iacobucci greeted reliever Tim Suminski with a double to center. Neil Schroth and Banks drove them in with back-to-back RBI singles, and Chris Mitko singled in Schroth two batters later. YSU still had runners at the corners with one out, but Dosch struck out and Goubeaux grounded out to end the inning.

Chris Mitko doubled in Leon with two outs in the seventh to tie the score at 6-6.

YSU, short on bullpen help, went to Jonathan Crist for his second career appearance on the mound. The Flames scored six runs off of him and one more off of Cody Dearth in building a 13-6 lead after seven innings.

Banks had an RBI single, and Dosch hit a sacrifice fly in the ninth for YSU's final two runs.

Penguins starter Bill Turosky threw the first six innings and allowed four earned runs on 10 hits. UIC starter Matt Salemi lasted only four frames and allowed three runs. Jon Ryan earned the win, allowing one earned run 3.2 innings.

Iacobucci went 3-for-5 and scored twice, and Banks had three hits and drove in two. Mitko and Dosch added two RBIs apiece. McGuiggan, Alex De LaRosa and Serna had two hits apiece for the Flames.
