Haley Thomas' Two Homers Leads Softball to Split at Rebel Games

Kissimmee, Fla. -- Junior Haley Thomas belted two home runs and drive in five to lead the Youngstown State softball team (12-6) to a 14-8 win over Lafayette on Wednesday afternoon at the Rebel Games. The Guins also dropped a 5-4 contest to Columbia later in the day.
Thomas led off the game with a solo home run, her third of the season, to put the Guins on the board first, 1-0.
After the Guins added three runs in the top of the second, sophomore Caroline Krombach, who went 2-for-3 with three runs batted in, ripped a two-run single with the bases loaded to extend the Guins lead to 6-0.
Thomas then followed with a three-run blast to center field to extend the lead to 9-0.
Lafayette scored two in the third, one in both the fourth and fifth to trim the Penguins' lead to 9-4.
The Guins' extended their lead to 12-4 in the top of the sixth keyed by a run-scoring double by Kim Klonowski and bases-loaded walk by Krombach and Thomas.
After Lafayette added two in the bottom of the sixth, the Guins posted two more in the top of the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Kim Klonowski and a run-scoring single by Samantha Snodgrass.
Lafayette plated two more runs in the bottom half of the seventh for the game's final runs.
In the night cap against Columbia, the Guins jumped out to a 4-1 after scoring two runs in the first and two more in the second.
Thomas led off the bottom half of the first with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Kristina Rendle, and scored on a triple by Vicky Rumph. Rumph then scored on Sarah Gabel's single up the middle.
After a solo home run by Columbia's Maggie Johnson, the Guins added two more in the second inning keyed by run scoring singles by Thomas and Ingalls. Kristen Philen singled with one out and moved to second on Amanda Palmore's walk. Philen scored on Thomas' single while Palmore scored on Ingalls single.
The Lions, though, rallied for two runs in the fourth and two more in the sixth to grab the lead and held on for the win.
The Guin are back in action Thursday against Fairleigh Dickinson at 9 a.m. and Siena at 11 a.m.
