Box Score Los Angeles -- The University of Northern Iowa had five players score in double figures and outscored the Youngstown State women's basketball team 25-1 in second-chance points to win the DoubleTree L.A. Westside Thanksgiving Classic Championship on Saturday at LMU's Gersten Pavilion.
UNI, which won 27 games last season and is ranked 10th in the collegeinsider.com mid-major top 25 poll, hit 11 3-pointers in the win.
YSU's Brandi Brown had a game-high 25 points, and Heidi Schlegel added 17 points and six rebounds. Both Penguins forwards earned all-tournament team honors. Kenya Middlebrooks and Monica Touvelle both had 10 points for YSU, which saw its record evened at 3-3.
Tournament MVP Amber Kirschbaum had 24 points and 10 rebounds to lead UNI.
Although the Panthers led by double digits the entire second half, YSU kept battling against the defending Missouri Valley Conference champions. A Middlebrooks triple with 17:17 remaining made the score 53-43, but that was as close as the Guins could get.
UNI took a 67-49 lead with 11:16 remaining, and the margin was between 14 and 17 points until Kirschbaum's bucket with 2:53 left. UNI eventually led by 21 before YSU scored the final four points of the contest.
Brown had 15 of her points in the second half and went 11-for-12 from the free-throw line. She was held to just three rebounds, though, and the Panthers held a 44-26 edge on the glass for the game. Brown finished with 44 points at the tournament, and Schlegel had 34.
UNI shot 49.2 percent overall and 42.3 percent from 3-point range, and YSU countered by shooting 43.1 percent overall and 41.2 percent from beyond the arc. The Penguins held the edge in points in the paint, points off turnovers and fast-break points.
UNI hit seven 3-pointers in the first half and used a 15-2 run to build a 48-36 lead at halftime. The Panthers hit treys on their final two possessions, including a long one at the buzzer, to end the half on a six-point run.
UNI's first two buckets of the game were triples, but four early points from Middlebrooks and six from Brown gave the Penguins a 15-14 edge with 12:34 remaining. UNI scored 15 of the next 17 points, including nine straight, to go up 29-17 with 7:22 left.
A Brittni Donaldson 3-pointer gave UNI its largest lead of the half at 32-19, but YSU was able to trim the deficit to six on three different occasions. Schlegel's lay-up off a pass from Nortey made the score 42-36 with 50 seconds left, but Rachel Madrigal and Mercedees Morgan had triples on UNI's final two possessions.
