Box Score Youngstown -- The Youngstown State volleyball team let a match get away on Tuesday evening, dropping a four-set match to Kent State at Beeghly Center.
The Penguins won the first set and led late in the third set before falling 25-18, 16-25, 23-25, 19-25. Freshman Marissa Hundelt had a team-best 13 kills, and five other Penguins had at least six kills.
Tasha Reid had nine kills while Jenna Cavanaugh and Haley Kapferer had eight kills apiece. Kelsi Bitter added seven, and setter Dani Soubliere had a solid all around night with six kills, 38 assists and nine digs.
Maigan Larson had a match-high 15 kills and posted a .481 attack percentage for Kent State. The Golden Flashes had eight blocks in the final set and 13 overall.
Youngstown State hit .400 and had sideouts on 15 of 18 chances in the first set. Hundelt connected on six out of eight chances without an error, and Chelsea Guerrieri had two aces.
Kent State led the entire set to go into the break even, and they rallied in the third set to take a 2-1 advantage. The Penguins led 21-17 to force a Kent State timeout, but the Golden Flashes came out and scored eight of the final 10 points to win the set.
The Penguins led 14-12 in the fourth before allowing Kent State to score seven straight points. YSU had 13 errors in the final set, which was one fewer than it had in the first three sets combined.
Both the Penguins and Golden Flashes had 52 kills, but YSU had 12 more attack errors.
YSU will open Horizon League play on Friday at UIC at 8 p.m. Eastern.
