Charleston, S.C. — Gabriela Machin nearly had a triple-double to lead Youngstown State's volleyball team to a 3-2 victory over Quinnipiac on Sunday to conclude a tournament at the College of Charleston.
Machin had 14 kills, eight digs and eight blocks to help the Penguins rally from a 2-1 deficit. YSU won 25-20, 21-25, 20-25, 25-17, 15-12 at TD Arena.
Machin was the only Penguin to reach double figures in kills based on the match's flow. Youngstown State had 15 total blocks as Taya Nordmann also had eight, and Quinnipiac had 18 serving errors.
The Bobcats had six serving errors while Machin posted four kills in the opening set as YSU led for the duration of a 25-20 win. There were 18 ties and nine lead changes over the next two sets as Quinnipiac won 25-21 and 25-20 to even the match.
Youngstown State's only deficit in the fourth was 3-2, and the Penguins scored five straight points behind two aces from Nordmann to go up 7-3. YSU extended its advantage to 20-10 on a Machin kill, and it went on to win 25-17.
In the fifth, Machin had back-to-back blocks and a kill during a 4-0 run that gave Youngstown State a 4-1 lead. The Penguins remained ahead the rest of the match, fighting off the Bobcats as they got within one five different times.
Youngstown State will host Akron and Kent State next weekend at Zidian Family Arena at Beeghly Center to conclude its non-conference schedule. The Penguins will host the Zips on Thursday at 6 p.m., and they'll welcome the Golden Flashes on Friday at 6 p.m.
