Charleston, S.C. — Youngstown State's volleyball team built a two-set lead but couldn't hang on as it dropped a five-set decision to Stetson on Saturday afternoon at the College of Charleston's Steve Baumrind Invitational. The set scores at TD Arena were 23-25, 11-25, 25-23, 25-23, 15-11.
Abbie Householder and Gabriela Machin had 15 kills apiece to lead the Penguins offensively, while Bianca Giglio and Layne Graffice had 12 and 11 kills, respectively. Giglio's dozen kills came on 21 attempts, and Householder and Graffice both had double-doubles.
Stetson's Zuzanna Bury was a workhorse, finishing with 27 kills on 76 attempts while adding 20 digs. The Hatters' pin hitter had 30 more attempts than any other player in the match.
Aside from a one-sided 25-11 margin in the second set, three of the first four sets were decided by two points.
Machin and Householder combined for 11 of YSU's 18 kills in the opening set as the Penguins won 25-23, and Youngstown State ran away with a 25-11 win in the second set.
Stetson jumped out to a 10-4 lead in the third set, and YSU fought back and took a 21-20 lead on a Householder kill. Bury had back-to-back kills for the Hatters to spark a 5-2 run to end the set, and she had eight kills in the set.
Stetson scored the final two points in the fourth set for another 25-23 win to send the match to the fifth, and the Hatters doubled up the Penguins in kills in the final stanza. Bury had five of Stetson's 10 kills, including three during a 6-1 run that closed out the match.
Youngstown State will play its final match in Charleston on Sunday against Quinnipiac at 11 a.m.
