Box Score Niagara Falls, N.Y. -- The Youngstown State
baseball team scored four runs in both the sixth and seventh
innings to rally and defeat Niagara 10-3 on Tuesday afternoon at
Sal Maglie Stadium.
Derek Carr drove in all three of his runs during those two
innings, and Eric Marzec scored in both frames in his first game
action in more than four weeks.
Eight different pitchers made an appearance for the Guins as
they used the contest to get work for their bullpen. All three of
Niagara's runs scored off Ryan Messmer in the fourth, but Cody
Dearth came in right after and threw 2.2 scoreless innings to
receive the win.
The Penguins took a 2-0 lead in the second inning off Niagara
starter Brian Deering when Zac McFarland singled in Jeremy Banks
and Clayton scored on Casey Holland's sacrifice fly.
Dearth came in with the bases loaded and one out in the fourth
with the score tied at 2-2. He surrendered a sacrifice fly to
center to the first batter he faced, which gave the Purple Eagles
the lead, but he got Stephen Smith to pop out to short to end the
inning.
Neither team scored in the fifth, but YSU reclaimed the lead in
the sixth with its first of two four-run innings. Marzec scored the
tying run on an error on a pickoff play, and Joe Iacobucci scored
the eventual winning run on a wild pitch. Carr's single to right
brought in Clayton and Banks to make the score 6-3.
In the seventh, Clayton hit a two-run single with the bases
loaded, Carr drew a bases loaded walk and Clayton scored on a
passed ball.
Trent Wood allowed only one base runner in 1.2 innings, and he
gave way to Marzec to record the final out in the ninth. Marzec,
the team's closer and a starting outfielder, was playing in his
first contest since March 20. He was out with a concussion after a
collision in the outfield.
The Penguins will return home on Wednesday to play Akron at 3
p.m. at Eastwood Field.
