Youngstown -- The Youngstown State football team turned the ball over four times and couldn't come up with a game-tying touchdown in the final seconds as it fell 30-24 to Indiana State on Senior Day at Stambaugh Stadium.
The Sycamores secondary picked off quarterback Kurt Hess four times, and they forced two incomplete passes from their 11 in the final 10 seconds as Indiana State defeated YSU for just the second time in 20 tries.
Indiana State improves to 6-4 overall and 4-3 in Missouri Valley Football Conference play while Youngstown State ends its season at 3-8 overall and 1-7 in the conference.
Indiana State led 30-17 fewer than three minutes into the second half after Ronnie Fouch's fourth touchdown pass, but Youngstown State's defense did not allow another score the rest of the game.
Hess was picked off on a deep pass on the third play of the second half, and Calvin Burnett returned it 39 yards to the Indiana State 48. Fouch needed just four plays to give the Sycamores a 13-point cushion when he hit Alex Jones for an eight-yard touchdown.
A one-yard touchdown by Adaris Bellamy capped a 13-play drive that got the Penguins within 30-24 with 1:46 remaining in the third. The tailback ran eight times on the drive, and he picked up a first down on fourth-and-one on the Indiana State 38.
The Penguins possessed the ball just twice in the fourth quarter, and both ended in the red zone.
Wide receiver Dominique Barnes completed to Ely Ducatel a pass off an end-around for a 50-yard gain to the ISU 25. Hess overthrew Carson Sharbaugh near the end zone on first down, and Bellamy ran for seven yards to set up a third-and-three. Bellamy was stopped for no gain at the 18, and Hess was picked off in the end zone on an off-balance pass as he avoided a rush.
Fouch connected with Jones for 29 yards to midfield to shift field position, but the Penguins allowed only one yard over the next three plays to force a punt.
Youngstown State took over on its 21 with 2:19 remaining, and Hess completed three straight passes to Barnes to move the ball to the Indiana State 27. The quarterback threw three straight incomplete passes, and he was flagged for an illegal forward pass when he threw beyond the line of scrimmage on second down. He redeemed himself by scrambling for 16 yards on fourth-and-14, but he stayed in bounds to make sure he got the necessary yardage. He threw a four-yard completion to Barnes at the ISU 11 on a quick play on the next snap, and he spiked the ball to stop the clock with nine seconds remaining. Hess's jump-ball toss to Barnes on third down was tipped away, and he threw high out the back of the end zone as time expired.
Hess finished 12-of-27 for 191 yards, but he was sacked twice and threw the four interceptions. Bellamy led all rushers with 78 yards and two touchdowns, and Jamaine Cook had 77 yards and one touchdown. Barnes had 10 catches for 132 yards in his final collegiate game.
On the defensive side, senior Brandian Ross had eight tackles, intercepted a pass, forced a fumble and recovered another.
Fouch completed 16-of-23 passes for 290 yards and four touchdowns, but he had 199 yards and three scores at halftime. Jones caught five passes for 147 yards and two touchdowns, and Bryant Kent had two receiving touchdowns.
Both teams turned the ball over twice in the first half. Only one turnover led to points, though, and that happened early.
Darrius Gates fumbled on the second play of the game on the Indiana State 25 on a hit by John Sasson, and Ross recovered for YSU on the 23. Hess completed a first-down pass to Barnes on third-and-four to extend the wideout's school-record streak of consecutive games with a reception to 34. Bellamy then scored three plays later from the one to give the Guins a 7-0 lead.
The Sycamores' next drive also lasted only two plays, but it ended 79 yards later in the end zone. Fouch hit Justin Hilton for 11 yards on the first play, and he connected with Jones on a 68-yard pass-and-catch down the left sideline for a touchdown. After two offside penalties against YSU, Gates scored the two-point conversion with a run over the left side.
YSU went three-and-out on its next drive, and Fouch threw another long touchdown on a post pattern to Kent that covered 50 yards. The Sycamores faced second-and-22 after a clipping penalty, but Jones went 12 yards on a screen pass to set up the score to Kent with 6:45 remaining in the opening quarter.
The Penguins climbed back to within 15-14 on their next drive when Cook scored on a five-yard rush with 4:00 remaining. Hess hit Andre Barboza on a 48-yard pass down to the Indiana State nine on third-and-six.
Hess was intercepted on a deep pass into the red zone on YSU's next possession, but the Penguins defense forced a three-and-out to give the offense the ball on the Indiana State 48. YSU drove down to the two, and Stephen Blose's 19-yard field goal gave the Penguins a 17-15 advantage with 7:27 left in the half.
Indiana State answered on its next possession, putting together an 11-play drive that lasted 5:41 and ended with an 11-yard pass from Fouch to Kent. Fouch then connected with Leonard Riston over the middle for the two-point conversion.
The Sycamores had a chance to tack on another score right before halftime as a C.J. Cook interception gave them the ball at the YSU 21. However, Fouch fumbled on the next play as he tried to dive into the endzone, and David Rach recovered for YSU for a touchback.
Indiana State had 309 of total offense in the first half on 34 plays, averaging more than nine yards per snap. The Sycamores finished with 461 yards total, and the Penguins posted 450 yards.
