Box Score Fairborn, Ohio -- Senior Erich Diedrich moved within one
home run of Youngstown State's career record when he hit his 25th
in a 15-5 loss to Wright State on Friday afternoon.
Diedrich went 3-for-5 and scored twice as YSU led 3-0 after the
top of the second. Wright State went on to score 15 straight runs
on 16 hits and five YSU errors.
Game two of the scheduled doubleheader was called in the bottom
of the first because of rain. YSU will play two games at Valparaiso
on Saturday starting at 1 p.m.
The Penguins scored twice in the top of the first despite having
a player thrown out at the plate. Josh Page drew a walk to start
the game and went to second on Sean Lucas' grounder. Diedrich then
ripped a single to right that Page tried to score on but was gunned
down by Ross Vagedes. Joe Iacobucci then brought in Diedrich on a
single to right, and Anthony Porter followed with an RBI
double.
YSU got an unearned run in the second as David Leon singled,
Page reached on an error and Lucas hit an RBI single.
The Raiders took the lead with four runs in the second, the last
of which came on a double steal, and they scored at least once in
each of the remaining innings.
Wright State starter Alex Kaminsky settled down after allowing
the three runs on five hits in the first two innings. He did not
allow a run and held YSU to four hits through the next five innings
to improve to 7-1 on the year.
Diedrich's solo homer in the ninth broke the scoreless drought,
and Porter brought in Mike Turjanica on a groundout later in the
inning for the final score.
Corey Vukovic was charged with the loss, allowing nine runs -
only five of which were earned - in five innings.
Wright State improved to 25-19 overall and 14-6 in the Horizon
League with the win. YSU dropped to 18-29 and 10-10.
