Box Score Niles, Ohio -- Wright State starter Alex Kaminsky threw six
scoreless innings, and Youngstown State couldn't come up with
clutch hits as the Raiders won 8-2 on a rainy Friday evening at
Eastwood Field.
Rain has altered the rest of the weekend's schedule. The teams
will now play a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at a time yet to
be determined.
Joe Iacobucci had three hits while David Leon and Josh Page had
two apiece for the Penguins, who dropped to 9-8 in Horizon League
contests and three games behind the front-running Raiders.
The Penguins had 11 hits, but only two came with runners in
scoring position in 11 opportunities. They also had a runner on
third with less than two outs twice and did not execute.
Gerald Ogrinc had three hits and three RBIs to lead Wright
State.
After being retired in order in the first, the Raiders led off
the second with back-to-back doubles by Justin Parker and Jeff
Mercer to score the game's first run. Ross Vagedes and Ogrinc then
followed with a sacrifice bunt and sacrifice fly to push the second
run across.
The Penguins had a chance to answer in the bottom half but were
turned away empty. Iacobucci led off with a single, and Anthony
Porter's single to right put runners at the corners with one out.
Kaminsky came back to strike out C.J. Morris and induce Leon into a
fly out to left.
The Raiders added a run in the third on three straight two-out
singles from Aaron Fields, Jeremy Hamilton and Parker.
Casey McGrew leadoff double in the fifth led to a run, and
Kaminsky worked around two doubles in the bottom half to keep
Wright State ahead 4-0. Leon led off with a double but was thrown
out going to third on a bunt. Page then doubled to put runners on
second and third with one out, but Sean Lucas flied out and Page
was picked off to end the inning.
McGrew led off the seventh with a homer, and the Raiders added
two unearned runs later in the inning to take a 7-0 advantage.
The Penguins got two runs in the seventh when Diedrich's double
to right scored Page and Jason Reitenbach. They had a chance to
climb back into the game in the eighth off reliever Michael
Meintel. After a double play nullified a leadoff walk, the Penguins
loaded the bases as Morris was beaned, Leon singled and Reitenbach
drew a walk. Meintel fell behind Page 0-2 before throwing three
straight strikes to work out of the jam.
The Raiders added a run in the ninth on Ogrinc's RBI single.
Wright State had the leadoff hitter reach four times, and that
runner scored on three occasions.
