Box Score Bowling Green, Ky. -- Western Kentucky University got
strong pitching for the second straight game and scored all nine of
its runs in a three-inning span to complete a series sweep of
Youngstown State on Sunday afternoon.
WKU starter Rye Davis threw 5.1 scoreless innings, and four
Hilltopper relievers combined to hold the Penguins without a run
and one hit in 3.2 innings.
Davis earned his first win of the year, but he found himself
being equaled by YSU starter Aaron Swenson in the early
innings.
Neither pitcher allowed a runner past second base through the
first four innings until WKU scratched a run across with two outs
in the fifth. Matt Bracken reached on an infield single, moved to
second on a wild pitch and scored on a misplayed grounder.
Terrence Dayleg hit a two-run double in the sixth that knocked
Swenson from the game, and Bracken brought him in with a single off
of Corey Vukovic.
The Penguins had a chance to cut into the lead in the seventh by
loading the bases with one out. Sean Lucas was hit by a pitch to
start the inning, and Joe Iacobucci and Anthony Porter drew
back-to-back one-out walks. Reliever Evan Teague then collected
himself and struck out the next two hitters to get out of the
inning.
The offense rewarded Teague by scoring five runs in the bottom
half, including a three-run home run with two outs by J.B.
Paxson.
The Penguins will open up a busy week on Tuesday with a 3 p.m.
contest against Bowling Green at Eastwood Field.
