Box Score Cincinnati -- Xavier sophomore starter Danny Rosenbaum
allowed only four base runners and struck out 11 batters to
defeat Youngstown State 7-0 on Wednesday afternoon at Marge Schott
Stadium.
Penguins starter Corey Vukovic held Xavier to two runs on five
hits and struck out a career-high seven batters but fell victim to
a lack of run support.
Sophomore catcher Anthony Porter reached base all four times he
came to the plate with a double, single, walk and hit by pitch.
Anthony Munoz had YSU's other hit, a leadoff single in the third
inning.
Vukovic and Rosenbaum battled through five innings before Xavier
erupted for four runs in the sixth and one in the seventh off of
the YSU bullpen.
"Vukovic pitched very well and had his spots down, especially
for his first start," head coach Rich Pasquale said. "You have to
tip your hat to their starter. He just did a very good job of
settling down after we hit two balls to the fence in the first
inning. He made adjustments and just had us off balance."
Xavier got on the board in the third when Drew Schmidt drew the
lone walk against Vukovic, advanced on a sacrifice and scored on
Steve Brown's two-out single. Brown singled home Schmidt again in
the fifth on one of three hits in the inning as Xavier went up
2-0.
All four of Xavier's runs in the sixth came with two outs as
John McCambridge had a two-run single and Brown hit a two-run
double.
Bobby Freking homered off Craig Gillet in the seventh for the
final score of the contest.
David Hartman threw two scoreless innings to close out the win
for Xavier.
The Penguins and Musketeers will play three more times over the
next three days, including a 5 p.m. affair tomorrow at
Athletes in Action Stadium in Xenia, Ohio. YSU will also take on
Dayton tomorrow in Xenia at 2 p.m.
