Box Score Indianapolis, Ind. -- Freshman Ta-myra Davis
posted her first career double-double with career-high 19 points
and 10 rebounds and sophomore Ashley Pendleton added a career-high
14 points but the Youngstown State women's basketball team (7-21)
fell to Butler (15-14), 77-60, in the quarterfinals of the Horizon
League Tournament on Thursday at Hinkle Field House.
Butler nailed 12 3-pointers and placed four players in double
figures led by senior Jackie Closser and Susan Lester who each
scored 15 points. Lade Akande added 13 and Cassie Freeman scored 11
points off the bench.
Butler, which made six 3-pointers in the first half, jumped out
to a quick 15-2 advantage and led by 12 points, 24-12, after a
3-pointer by Susan Lester at the 8:30 mark.
Davis, who scored seven points and grabbed eight boards in the
first half, began a 9-0 run by the Penguins with two free throws
and Jessica Schloemp added two jumpers to slice the deficit to
24-18 at the 6:52 mark.
A lay up by Monique Godfrey and a free throw by Heather Karner
with 5:05 to go capped the run and brought the Penguins within
three, 24-21.
Butler responded with a 12-0 run over the three-minutes to
balloon its cushion to 15 points, 36-21, and held the Penguins
without a field goal until a Lauren Branson jumper at the 1:35
mark.
Davis added a jumper to bring YSU within 11, 36-25, at the 1:06
mark but Butler's Cassie Freeman drilled a 3-pointer with 40
seconds left to put the Bulldogs ahead by 14, 39-35, at the
intermission.
