Box Score Youngstown -- Sophomore Monique Godfrey scored
a career-high 20 points and hit a running jumper in the lane with
10 seconds remaining to lift the Youngstown State women's
basketball team to a 66-64 victory over Loyola on Saturday evening
at the Beeghly Center.
The Penguins, which place four players in double figures for the
second time this season, improve to 6-14 overall and 4-6 in the
Horizon League while the Ramblers fall to 6-15 overall and 4-6 in
the circuit.
Junior Jessica Schloemp's jumper with 44 seconds remaining
knotted the game at 64-64 and her defensive rebound after a Maggie
McCloskey miss set up Godfrey's game-winner.
Two free throws by Loyola's Jenna Real put the Ramblers ahead by
four, 63-59, with 2:33 left, but Godfrey nailed her second
3-pointer of the game to cut the lead to one, 63-62, with 2:13 to
go.
Jennifer Juergens put the Ramblers back up by two by converting
one free throw at the 1:08 mark.
The Penguins scored 38 points in the paint compared to 22 for
Loyola and outscored the Ramblers' bench 17-8.
Junior Lauren Branson scored a season-high 11 points and dished
out six assists for the third straight game. Sophomore Nikita
LaFleur scored in double figures off the bench for the second
consecutive game and added seven rebounds and five blocks.
Ashley Pendleton also added 10 points and seven rebounds for the
Penguins.
Youngstown State takes on Oakland in a non-league game, Tuesday,
Feb. 6, at 7 p.m.
