Youngstown -- Sophomore Monique Godfrey scored a career-high 21 points and the Penguins shot 55.6 percent from the field in the second half but the Youngstown State women's basketball team dropped a 76-70 decision to UW-Milwaukee on Saturday afternoon at the Beeghly Center.

The Penguins, who placed four players in double figures, fall to 7-17 overall and 5-8 in the Horizon League while the Panthers improve to 12-13 overall and 8-4 in the league.

Along with Godfrey in double figures were junior Jessica Schloemp with 12 and sophomores Ashley Pendleton and Velissa Vaughn with 10 apiece.

The teams battled through nine second-half lead changes and four ties during the first 10 minutes of the stanza before the Panthers took a 56-51 edge with 7:41 left.

Sophomore Nikita LaFleur hit a jumper as the shot-clock expired to bring the Penguins within three, 62-59, at the 2:53 mark, but UWM's Traci Edwards converted two free throws and a jumper to cushion its lead to seven, 66-59, with 1:55 remaining.

Godfrey, who scored 15 points in the second half, nailed a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to 66-63 with 1:21 left then UWM's Meredith Onson answered with a 3-pointer to put the Panthers back up six, 69-63, with 1:06 to go.

Vaughn hit a trey and a Godfrey layup with 14 seconds left sliced the lead to two, 72-70, but Jodi Crumble and Edwards, who scored a game-high 22 points, made four straight charity tosses to seal the Panthers win.

The Penguins have a week off before visiting in-state rival Cleveland State, Saturday, Feb. 24, at 3 p.m. The game will be broadcast on SportsTime Ohio.
