Box Score Youngstown -- The Youngstown State women's
basketball team put a scare into 25th-ranked UW-Green Bay on
Thursday night at the Beeghly Center, but the Phoenix were able to
pull out a 74-62 victory over the Penguins.
YSU pulled within 48-44 at the 13:39 mark of the second half
before the Phoenix went on a decisive 16-3 run that ballooned its
advantage to 64-47 with 6:52 remaining.
In the later stages of the contest, the Guins were able to get with
11 points with 2:29 remaining, however, that was as close they came
the rest of the game.
Junior guard Heather Karner scored 17 points to lead four
Penguins who finished in double figures. Velissa Vaughn had 13,
Monique Godfrey contributed 12 and Jessica Schloemp contributed
11.
UW-Green Bay was led by forward Nicole Soulis who scored a
game-high 23 points. Natalie Berglin had 15 while Amanda Popp and
Rachel Porath both had 10.
The Penguins drop to 7-16 overall and 5-7 in the Horizon League
while the Phoenix improve to 20-3 overall and 11-0 while extending
their winning streak to 17.
In the first half, neither team led by more than four points
until the Phoenix went ahead 30-25 following two Soulis free
throws.
UWGB extended the lead to 32-25 on two Kayla Groh free throws
before YSU answered on a Karner 3-pointer and a Ta-myra Davis free
throw cutting the deficit to 32-29 at the 4:23 mark. However, that
was the closest the Guins could get the remainder of the night.
From that point, the Phoenix used a 9-0 run to go in front 41-29
following a Soulis basket at the 1:57 mark. At the break, YSU
trailed 43-34 following a late 3-pointer by Velissa Vaughn.
The Penguins play their final home game of the regular season on
Saturday when they play host to UW-Milwaukee. Tipoff at the Beeghly
Center is set for 2:05 p.m.
