Box Score Jared Allen passed for 241 yards and the game's only touchdown
as the Florida Atlantic Owls (2-2) defeated the Youngstown State
Penguins (2-2) 13-6 on Saturday evening at Stambaugh Stadium.
Allen was 18-of-29 to lead FAU's 293-yard attack while Roosevelt
Bynes had 122 yards receiving and a touchdown.
Aaron Marshall was 8-of-18 for 82 yards to lead the Penguins
while Matt Rycraft finished 4-of-7 for 37 yards. Josiah Doby rushed
for 59 yards on eight carries in his first game of the year and
Kyle Smith had 39 yards receiving. The Penguins finished with 277
total yards and 158 on the ground. The YSU defense held FAU to just
48 yards rushing.
Florida Atlantic took an early lead as they marched 48 yards on
their opening drive to set up a 22-yard field goal by Mark Myers.
After a 48-yard kickoff return to the FAU 48 by Anthony Jackson,
Allen connected with Anthony Crissinger-Hill for a 21-yard gain
down to the YSU 26. The Owls later converted on a fourth-and-one on
the YSU 17, then took a 3-0 lead six plays later on Myers' make
with 8:59 remaining in the first quarter.
The Penguins got on the board midway through the second quarter
by driving 58 yards on 16 plays to tie the game at three. Starting
at the YSU 19, Marshall connected on two straight passes to Mike
Roberts and Chris DiMauro to get the Penguins to the YSU 36.
Marshall then connected with Kyle Smith for a 22-yard gain to the
FAU 45 on a third-and-13. After a fourth down conversion, Marshall
found Smith again on a third-and-21 for a 12-yard gain that set up
a 41-yard field goal for Nick Terracina with 4:56 remaining in the
first half.
Florida Atlantic tacked on another field goal with eight seconds
remaining in the opening half when Myers was good from 44 yards.
After starting on their own 40 with 57 seconds on the clock, the
Owls went 33 yards on four plays to set up Myers' make that gave
them a 6-3 lead heading into the locker room.
The Owls took a 13-3 lead with 8:10 remaining in the third
quarter after going 82 yards on 12 plays on their opening drive of
the second half. Allen passed for 71 yards on the drive, 56 of
which went to Bynes. After connecting on strikes of 14 and 35
yards, Allen found Bynes again from seven yards out over the middle
for the only touchdown of the contest.
The first turnover of the game came with 3:13 remaining in the
third when FAU's William Gray hit Mike Burns and jarred the ball
loose at the FAU 17. After starting at their own 14, Rycraft
connected with Phil Larmon for 25 yards, then Doby had back-to-back
16-yard rushes to the FAU 45. Rycraft then rushed for five yards
and a late hit tacked on another 15 yards to put the Penguins at
the FAU 12 before Burns' fumble.
The Penguins got within seven with 9:34 remaining in the fourth
when Terracina hit form 37 yards out to cap off a seven-play,
37-yard drive, but the Owl defense came up with a big stand at the
end of the game and did not allow another score.
Down 13-6 with 2:49 remaining in regulation, the Penguins
started on the FAU 42 but could not capitalize. Back-to-back
penalties pushed the Penguins back to their own 43, then Brett
Konchak sacked Marshall with 2:08 left on the clock.
The Penguins had one last shot with nine seconds remaining on
their own 26, but Marshall's "Hail Mary" was intercepted by Quincy
Skinner.
YSU will continue their 2003 campaign when they travel to
Lynchburg, Va. on Sept. 27 to take on Liberty at 7 p.m.
