Box Score Terre Haute, Ind. -- Josh Cayson scored on a 15-yard run in
overtime as the Youngstown State football team overcame a 10-point
fourth-quarter deficit to earn a 30-24 overtime over Indiana State
on Saturday afternoon at Memorial Stadium.
Sophomore Aaron Marshall stepped in for an injured Matt Rycraft
at quarterback and led the charge back. Marshall's 30-yard
touchdown toss to Phil Larmon trimmed a 24-14 deficit to three
points before Nick Terracina made a 42-yard field goal in a
swirling wind to tie the contest with 33 seconds left.
But Indiana State charged downfield and with two seconds left,
freshman Kyle Hooper missed a 42-yard field goal that would have
won the game.
In overtime, YSU (5-3 overall and 2-1 in the Gateway) won the
toss and went on defense first. On ISU's first play freshman
quarterback Jake Schiff rumbled 22 yards to the YSU three, but Matt
Briggs stripped the ball out of Schiff's right arm and Briggs
recovered to end the Sycamores' possession.
After that, it took Youngstown State two plays to win the game.
Cayson ran for 10 yards on his first rush before taking the ball to
the house on a 15-yard dash.
Head Coach Jon Heacock, who won his first overtime game on
Saturday, said his team never gave up all afternoon.
"We showed a lot of heart today," Heacock said. "We didn't do a
bunch of great things, but we never did stop playing."
Cayson finished the game rushing for 88 yards on 17 attempts and
had two touchdowns.
Schiff's fumble offset a gritty performance where he completed
18-of-27 passes for 216 yards and threw two touchdowns. He also had
93 yards rushing on 14 carries. Indiana State is now 3-5 and
0-3.
Trailing 24-14, Marshall, who had entered the game on the final
play of the previous series, led the Penguins on a 54-yard drive
that was capped when he hit Larmon from 30 yards out on a
third-and-one play at the 30.
YSU forced a Sycamores punt and with 2:16 remaining had the ball
on its own 34. Marshall moved Youngstown State to the Sycamore 25
and on fourth-and-16, Terracina kicked a 42-yarder to tie the
game.
Indiana State had a chance as Scott Penick returned the ensuing
kickoff to the Indiana State 45. Schiff moved his team to the YSU
25 on a 14-yard scamper and spiked the ball with three seconds
left.
But Hooper's kick sailed wide right as time expired.
"It was a huge win on the road in the Gateway," Heacock said.
"All of the Indiana State-Youngstown State games seem to come down
to the end. That is just how it is. But we make one more play in
the end."
Indiana State regained the lead with 2:11 left in the third on a
one-yard score by Monfort. The Sycamores marched an impressive 83
yards on a 11 plays, the longest drive allowed by YSU this
season.
In the third, YSU caught a break when Nate Baston pressured
Schiff and Justin Martin picked off an arrant pass at the Indiana
State 14.
After a defensive offside penalty, Cayson burst up the middle
for his first score giving YSU a 14-10 lead.
Indiana State came back to take the lead in the second
quarter.
The Sycamores' Terrance Miles blocked a Joe Bishop punt through
the back of the end zone to get his team on the board with 7:52
remaining in the quarter.
On the ensuing possession, YSU appeared to have stopped Indiana
State when Mike Bracken intercepted a Schiff pass inside the
Sycamores' 25, but on the play, a roughing-the-passer penalty was
called keeping the drive alive.
The penalty was costly as ISU drove to the YSU 29 where Schiff
threw a scoring pass to tight end Ryan King. ISU converted the
two-point attempt when Schiff threw a fade to Sam Logan in the back
corner of the end zone taking a 10-7 lead.
Just before the half, ISU drove to YSU's nine-yard, but Nate
Baston sacked Schiff forcing a fumble and Jeremiah Wright recovered
the ball at the eight with eight seconds remaining in the half.
The YSU offense struggled in the first half. Indiana State
outgained the Penguins 219-72 in the first 30 minutes and the
Sycamores ran 12 more offensive plays. YSU was also 0-of-5 on
third-down conversions while rushing for 15 yards on 18
carries.
YSU took advantage ISU's first turnover, of a muffed punt by
ISU's Carl Berman, to set up its first score. YSU took over at the
Indiana State 27 and Rycraft capped the short drive scoring on a
six-yard run.
The Penguins return home to play their annual Homecoming game
against Illinois State on Saturday.
