Sandy Stieber left her mark on the volleyball program ending her career as the school’s leader in kills and digs. She is now the fourth former Penguin volleyball player to be inducted into the YSU Athletics Hall of Fame.

Stieber played for the Penguins from 1988 through 1991. A two-time team captain, she finished her career with 798 kills on 2,073 attempts for a .244 hitting percentage. She had 950 digs, 112.5 total blocks, including 68 solos and 64 service aces in 415 games played in her four years.

Her senior year in 1991 was the most productive and she was named YSU’s 1991-92 The Vindicator Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

A team captain, she had a career-high 283 kills in 477 attempts for a hitting percentage of .228. Stieber averaged 2.5 kills per game during the season. She set a then school record with 350 digs while finishing with 22 service aces.

Stieber had highs of 15 kills against Niagara and Kent State, 38 attempts against Indiana (Pa.) and 20 digs versus Duquesne.

In her final match, the Penguins beat Buffalo in three games to finish 16-15 for the year.

As a junior in 1990, she had 230 kills on 647 attempts for a .210 hitting percentage. Serving as a team captain, she finished with 299 digs and a career-best 23 service aces.

She had a season-high 21 kills on 45 attempts against Slippery Rock while finishing with a season-high 20 digs versus St. Bonaventure. The Penguins concluded the year by playing in Alaska, becoming the only team in school history to compete in the state.

As a sophomore in 1989, she finished with 220 kills on a career-high 734 attempts for a .159 hitting percentage. She finished the year with 248 digs, a career-high 29 solo blocks and 16 service aces.

She had a career-high 21 kills on a career-best 63 attacks against Marietta. She also had a career-high 21 digs in the five-game match on Oct. 10.

As a freshman in 1988, Stieber had 65 kills in 215 total attacks while finishing with 53 digs and three service aces. YSU had a school-record-tying 18 wins during the year.

At one point during her career, Stieber made the second round of tryouts for the under-20 U.S. National Team.

She graduated from YSU with a degree in Business Marketing/Management.

Now she is an independent consultant for Premier Designs Jewelry. She also spent time coaching volleyball at her high school.

Stieber came to YSU after an accomplished career at Monroeville High School in Monroeville, Ohio. As a senior, she was her team’s most valuable player and graduated in the top 10 of her class.

Sandy Pressler and her husband, Jason, live in Bellevue, Ohio with their two children, Thomas and Sophia.
